On Taken For A Ride

Another interesting documentary, considering GM's current problems with the economy.

Taken for a Ride is an amazing documentary by Jim Kleina and Martha Olson that documents the efforts to derail mass transit in America. Ever wonder why the U.S. has the worst mass transportation system in the industrialized world? Using historical footage and investigative research, this film tells how GM fought to push freeways into the inner cities of America, and push public transportation out.

On Linux for Netbooks

After almost 3 weeks (and lots of late nights), my experiment with installing another Linux distribution for my Asus Eee 900 netbook has more or less come to a conclusion. After numerous installation  (Ubuntu, Mandriva, etc), countless reinstallation and testing, I'm settling now with Mandriva One.

I had never spend so much time just on a single objective. Through it all, I must say that at least I had learn a lot more about Linux, beyond the little I had to do sometimes in my work with Unix. Linux on the client is not for the faint of heart. One can easily break the OS from all the hacks and tweaking. I can understand now why Asus's provides little option for changing the delivered Xandros OS. With different kernels, distributions, package managers, windows managers, one wonders if having so many choices (each with their own issues) is such a good thing.

What I have learned from this experience is that tough as it may be, Linux can really be a substitute for MS Windows if you are willing to spend the time learning how it works. Every application I have on my Windows PC has the same or equivalent Linux counterpart, including My Dropbox and Skype, etc. The only application I could find for Linux is the PCSuite for my Nokia phone. Hello Nokia?

The 2008 Christmas Song

You'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better keep cash
I'm telling you why:
Recession is coming to town.
It's hitting you once,
It's hitting you twice
It doesn't care if you've been careful and wise
Recession is coming to town
It's worthless if you've got shares
It's worthless if you've got bonds
It's safe when you've got cash in hand
So keep cash for goodness sake, HEY
You'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better keep cash
I'm telling you why:
Recession is coming to town!
Finance products are confusing
Finance products are so vague
The banks make you bear the cost of risk
So keep out for goodness sake, OH
You'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better keep cash
I'm telling you why:
Recession is coming to town.

Thanks Karen for this email.

My Asus Eee PC 900 now on Ubuntu

After trying to live with the original delivered Linux from Asus for a week, I've decided to reflash the whole thing and now it's running on Ubuntu Eee.

The stock system is too restrictive and way too many hacks to perform for someone who likes to peek under the hood. In the end, I get too bogged down by all the changes, multiple windows manager, and Asus Launcher (the simple interface you see on every Asus Eee PC) trying to be more than just a overlay program.

What I gave up is the option to go back to the original state (unless I have an external DVD drive) and the boot up time (super fast in the stock Eee 900). What I gain is the option for a better user interface and a simple way to upgrade application software (like OpenOffice, Firefox, Adobe Flash player, etc) without resorting to circus tricks.

Now I am happier with this new toy.

Scraps And Morsels 20081123

What's been keeping me busy the last 2 days

I've been playing around with my new Asus Eee 900 netbook. Got it because it was cheap (at least way cheaper than the an XP netbook with a hard drive). This netbook's has a 20 gb (4 + 16) SSD drive.

Although much easier to setup than an XP netbook, I found myself spending way too much time tweaking small little things, like adding the option for an advance desktop, maximizing Firefox's screen space, font size for different applications, etc.

I'm still undecided now whether to spend even more time loading any Linux distribution, primarily because this netbook currently boot up almost immediately. Any other Linux distro while it may look better then the Eee's Xandros Linux would not be able to beat the boot up time.

Guess I'll just hack around this delivered OS for a while.

This blog post was done via the Eee 900 with ScribeFire on Firefox. Typing on the keyboard really isn't that bad after some practice. ScribeFire isn't that bad, but nothing beats Windows Live Writer.

On The Great Global Warming Swindle - Documentary Film

(Source: Garage TV)

For a more balanced point of view.

Controversial director Martin Durkin said: "You can see the problems with the science of global warming, but people just don't believe you - it's taken 10 years to get this commissioned.

"I think it will go down in history as the first chapter in a new era of the relationship between scientists and society. Legitimate scientists - people with qualifications - are the bad guys.

"It is a big story that is going to cause controversy.

"It's very rare that a film changes history, but I think this is a turning point and in five years the idea that the greenhouse effect is the main reason behind global warming will be seen as total bollocks.

On iPhone automatically attaching image to emails

(via Apple Discussions)

From Susan:

Please help! I took my husband's i-phone and found a raunchy picture of him attached to an e-mail to a woman in his sent e-mail file (a Yahoo account). When I approached him about this (I think that he is cheating on me) he admitted that he took the picture but says that he never sent it to anyone. He claims that he went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store and they told him that it is an i-phone glitch: that photos sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? The future of my marriage depends on this answer!

Is this a glitch or an excuse? Despite not owning an iPhone,  I say get the divorce lawyer!
