My Asus Eee PC 900 now on Ubuntu

After trying to live with the original delivered Linux from Asus for a week, I've decided to reflash the whole thing and now it's running on Ubuntu Eee.

The stock system is too restrictive and way too many hacks to perform for someone who likes to peek under the hood. In the end, I get too bogged down by all the changes, multiple windows manager, and Asus Launcher (the simple interface you see on every Asus Eee PC) trying to be more than just a overlay program.

What I gave up is the option to go back to the original state (unless I have an external DVD drive) and the boot up time (super fast in the stock Eee 900). What I gain is the option for a better user interface and a simple way to upgrade application software (like OpenOffice, Firefox, Adobe Flash player, etc) without resorting to circus tricks.

Now I am happier with this new toy.

What's been keeping me busy the last 2 days

I've been playing around with my new Asus Eee 900 netbook. Got it because it was cheap (at least way cheaper than the an XP netbook with a hard drive). This netbook's has a 20 gb (4 + 16) SSD drive.

Although much easier to setup than an XP netbook, I found myself spending way too much time tweaking small little things, like adding the option for an advance desktop, maximizing Firefox's screen space, font size for different applications, etc.

I'm still undecided now whether to spend even more time loading any Linux distribution, primarily because this netbook currently boot up almost immediately. Any other Linux distro while it may look better then the Eee's Xandros Linux would not be able to beat the boot up time.

Guess I'll just hack around this delivered OS for a while.

This blog post was done via the Eee 900 with ScribeFire on Firefox. Typing on the keyboard really isn't that bad after some practice. ScribeFire isn't that bad, but nothing beats Windows Live Writer.

(via googlesystem)

Imagine taking this video from Matt all the way up to 1280x720. I've tried this on my more than 2 year old notebook and it started to skip frames when I switch it to full screen. See if your machine is powerful enough to take it. (standard format - mono, resolution: 320x180) (stereo, resolution: 480x270) (new format - stereo, resolution: 1280x720)

On The Great Global Warming Swindle - Documentary Film

(Source: Garage TV)

For a more balanced point of view.

Controversial director Martin Durkin said: "You can see the problems with the science of global warming, but people just don't believe you - it's taken 10 years to get this commissioned.

"I think it will go down in history as the first chapter in a new era of the relationship between scientists and society. Legitimate scientists - people with qualifications - are the bad guys.

"It is a big story that is going to cause controversy.

"It's very rare that a film changes history, but I think this is a turning point and in five years the idea that the greenhouse effect is the main reason behind global warming will be seen as total bollocks.

On iPhone automatically attaching image to emails

(via Apple Discussions)

From Susan:

Please help! I took my husband's i-phone and found a raunchy picture of him attached to an e-mail to a woman in his sent e-mail file (a Yahoo account). When I approached him about this (I think that he is cheating on me) he admitted that he took the picture but says that he never sent it to anyone. He claims that he went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store and they told him that it is an i-phone glitch: that photos sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? The future of my marriage depends on this answer!

Is this a glitch or an excuse? Despite not owning an iPhone,  I say get the divorce lawyer!

Regardless of the performance of the President-Elect, the changes are not just rhetoric.

I am very impressed with Obama using YouTube for his weekly address before he is sworn in the White House. Too bad he has to give up his blackberry. In any case, it would be nice to see the oval office with a PC (Mac).

Finally, a head of state that embraces technology. About time too.

OMG - Lewis Hamilton Won The 2008 Formula One By Just One Point

The timing couldn't be worst for Felipe Massa's fan as they have just started celebrating Massa's victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix and at the same time the F1 championship.

The euphoria couldn't have lasted more than 20 seconds. Lewis Hamilton was about to lose the championship after dropping to the 6th position. Then at the last corner just before the checker flag Timo Glock ran out of fuel (a 2 stop gamble) and Lewis Hamilton took the 5th spot.

* It wasn't the fuel but Toyota’s decision not to pit for wet tyres when a late shower arrived. Timo Glock rapidly became easy prey for both Hamilton and Vettel.

I feel bad for Massa as his expression at the podium does not look like someone who had won the race. Ironically Lewis Hamilton lost the F1 championship a year ago here in Interlagos to Kimi Raikkonen by exactly one point.

I'm glad I stayed up to watched this race. It is the best race of the whole season.
